synergism An action in which the total effect of two components or agents is greater than the individual effects of the components when they are simply added together. For instance, in stress-corrosion cracking, cracks form and propagate deep into a material in much less time and at a much lower stress than could be predicted from the known effects of stress and the corrosive environment.
syntax 1. The structure of expressions in a language. 2. The rules that govern the structure of a language. 3. In data processing, grammatical rules for software programming that specify how instructions can be written.
synthesizer A variable-frequency signal source whose output frequency is stabilized by reference to a single-frequency reference source.
synthetic lubricant Any of a group of lubricating substances that can perform better than straight petroleum products in the presence of heat, chemicals, or other severe environmental conditions.
system 1. An organized collection of parts that are united by regulated interaction. [ISA-RP55.1-1975 (R1983)] 2. An organized collection of men, machines, and methods required to accomplish a specific objective. [ISA-RP55.1-1975 (R1983)] 3. An assembly of procedures, processes, methods, routines, or techniques united by some form of regulated interaction so as to form an organized whole. 4. The complex of hardware and software that is utilized to affect the control of a process. 5. An assemblage of equipment, machines, control devices, or their combination that is interconnected mechanically, hydraulically, pneumatically, or electrically and intended to act together to perform a predetermined function. 6. In data processing, any group of software and hardware that is connected so as to operate as a unit. 7. A group of interconnected elements (hardware or software) for accomplishing one or more specified functions in a particular context that is delimited by its interfaces. [ISATR50.02,Part 9-2000]
system, controlled The collective functions that are performed in and by the equipment in which the variable(s) is(are) to be controlled. Note: Equipment as embodied in this definition should be understood as excluding any automatic control equipment. [ANSI/ISA-51.1-1979 (R1993)]

system, controlling 1. Of a feedback control system, that portion that compares the functions of a directly controlled variable and a set point and adjusts a manipulated variable as a function of the difference. A controlling system includes the reference-input elements, the summing point, the forward and final controlling elements, and the feedback elements (including sensing element). [ANSI/ISA-51.1-1979 (R1993)] 2. Of a control system without feedback, that portion that manipulates the controlled system. [ANSI/ISA-51.1-1979 (R1993)]
system, directly controlled The body, process, or machine that is directly guided or restrained by the final controlling element so as to achieve a prescribed value of the directly controlled variable. [ANSI/ISA-51.1-1979 (R1993)]
system, idealized An imaginary system whose ultimately controlled variable has a stipulated relationship to a specified set point. The idealized system is the basis for performance standards. [ANSI/ISA-51.1-1979 (R1993)]
system, indirectly controlled The portion of the controlled system in which the indirectly controlled variable is changed in response to changes in the directly controlled variable. [ANSI/ISA-51.1-1979 (R1993)]
system, linear One of which the time response to several simultaneous inputs is the sum of their independent time responses. It is represented by a linear differential equation and has a transfer function which is constant for any value of input within a specified range. A system not meeting these conditions is described as nonlinear. [ANSI/ISA-51.1-1979(R1993)] See nonlinear system.
systematic error 1. An error in a set of measurements or control that can be predicted from scientific principles. Individual errors from the same cause bias the value of the mean because they all act in the same direction (sense). The amount of error in each individual value may or may not have a direct mathematical relationship to the true value of the quantity. 2. That which cannot be reduced by increasing the number of measurements if the equipment and conditions remain unchanged. 3. Any constant or reproducible error that is introduced into a measured or controlled value because of a failure to control or compensate for a specific side effect. See error, systematic.
systematic failures Failures caused by errors (including mistakes and acts of omissions) in safety life cycle (SLC) activities that, in turn, cause the safety instrumented system (SIS) to fail under some particular combination of inputs or under a particular environmental condition. Systematic failures can arise in any safety life cycle step. [ANSI/ISA-84.01-1996]

system board The control center of a computer.
system check A check on the overall performance of the system. It is usually not made by built-in computer check circuits, for example, control totals, hash totals, and record counts.
system chip A component designed with millions of electronic gates on a single chip. Gate-based designs are replacing transistorbased Application Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC) designs.
system control See control system.
system crash The sudden and complete failure of a computer system.
system deviation See deviation, system.
system device The device on which the operating system is stored.
Systeme Internationale d'Unites (SI) The current International System of Units.
systems analysis The examination of an activity, procedure, method, technique, or business in order to determine (a) behavioral relationships or (b) what must be accomplished and how.
system error In a control system, the difference between the value of the ultimately controlled variable and its ideal value.
system generation (SYSGEN) The process of building an operating system on or for a particular hardware configuration with software configuration modifications.
system generator 1. A program that performs system-level functions. 2. Any program that is part of the basic operating system. 3. A system utility program.
System Management (SM) System Management (SM) synchronizes the execution of function blocks (FBs) and the communication of function block (FB) parameters on the fieldbus. It also handles the publication of the time of day to all devices, automatically assigns device addresses, and searches for parameter names or “tags” on the fieldbus.
systems engineering 1. The process of designing, installing, and operating a system so as to achieve optimum output while conserving manpower, materials, and other resources. 2. Designing and operating a system so as to achieve a predetermined level of performance by taking into consideration all of the factors that contribute to system performance, including manpower utilization and human factors.

systems integration [Comp] 1. The procedures entailed in combining separately developed modules of components so that they work together as a complete system. [Cont] 2. The application engineering effort that is required to adapt an off-the-shelf control system to a particular process.
system software Software that is designed for a specific computer system or family of computer systems in order to facilitate the operation and maintenance of that system and associated programs, such as operating systems, compilers, utilities, and the like.
system specifications A detailed description or definition that formally describes how the system will meet its functional requirements.
system test 1. A procedure for determining the performance characteristics of an integrated, interconnected assemblage of equipment under conditions that evaluate its ability to perform as intended and that also verify the suitability of its interconnections. 2. A comprehensive “staging” or “functional” test that is performed on several loops simultaneously to verify their interaction. Cascade loop drawings, interlock ladder diagrams, or operational specifications are the basis for this test.
